Sneakin’ in under the wire

November 30th, 2008

I missed yesterday, but am posting today with only 7 minutes to go…

I just watched Iron Man on pay-per-view, and I have a new celebrity boyfriend.

Goodbye, Clive:

Hello, Robert:

Thankful

November 27th, 2008

I guess I need to write the requisite Thanksgiving Day post… if I had to pin it down, I’d say the things I’m most thankful for this year are:

  • My job. I may complain about what a tool my boss is, or how much I hate working at a place where the amount of time I sit in a chair every day is considered more important than the actual work that I do when it comes to promotions and year-end performance reviews, but at least I have a job that is pretty secure. The company I work for is in very good shape financially, which is no small feat in this day and age.
  • A roof over my head. I may need new flooring and paint throughout, and there are some minor 7-year-old-house repairs needed, but I’m so thankful I have a place to live. So many have lost their homes this year, and I’m incredibly lucky to have gotten a low interest rate on a fixed-rate mortgage when I bought. It may not be my dream house, but in this market, I’m happy to have it.
  • My family. This year saw my brother relocate to Indianapolis, which for me means having one of my best friends in the world close by. I love that we have the kind of relationship we do, and it means I get to be very involved in the lives of my girls. I’d love for my parents to move back this way… maybe I can be thankful for that next year?
  • A changing country. Given the outcome of this year’s election, I don’t think I need to expound a lot on that, except to say I can’t wait to see what the coming year will bring. Maybe it’s just that I’m more attuned to progress these days, but these are exciting times.

Pretty trite, eh? But all true. Those are the things I’m most thankful for this year.

Piemaker

November 26th, 2008

Can I just tell you how disappointed I am that Pushing Daisies has been cancelled? I love that show… *sniff*

Oh, well. As a tribute, I made my first pie ever for the Thanksgiving feast taking place tomorrow. First, I baked four Sugar Pie pumpkins…

I love the coloration on this one after it spent an hour and a half in the oven. So pretty.

Next, I pureed the pumpkin using a blender (as opposed to a food processor, because I don’t own one of those fancy contraptions)…

I think it turned out pretty well. I mean, what did people use before food processors were invented?
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
After that I mixed the ingredients…

in this bowl…

My grandmother used to mix her pies in this bowl, too. She mixed everything in this bowl.

And then I poured the mixture into the pie crust and placed it in the oven…

New pie plate. Removed the glue from inside the pie plate with nail polish remover… don’t tell!

And after 65 minutes, out of the oven came my first pumpkin pie…

I’m so proud of myself. I committed to doing the dessert for tomorrow, so I’m bringing this pie, a sour cream apple pie, and a strawberry pie from Gray Brother’s Cafeteria. All of that for three adults and 2 preschoolers. Forget turkey coma… I’m thinking we’ll be in a sugar coma.
