Friday (or Sunday) Foster – Lucky

March 9th, 2008

I completely forgot about my Friday Foster feature! I’m a dolt. I was so wrapped up in the new phone and getting it set up just so… but not to worry. Lucky is the Friday Foster this week.

Lucky was originally rescued from a shelter where he had spent several months just waiting for the right person, or family, to come along. He was adopted out to a family with children a couple of years ago, and returned to Indiana House Rabbit Society a few months ago. We do a lot of education with every adopter, and sometimes it just doesn’t click… it’s unfortunate that it took this family two years to realize that a rabbit wasn’t the right type of pet for them. At any rate, Lucky is one of my foster rabbits, so I can tell you from personal experience that he is a clown!

He loves play time, when he gets to come out and have his way in the rabbit room. He does crazy leaps and twists in the air, which we bunny people call “binkies”. He loves to dig and shred, so he gets lots of old phone books to play with — they satisfy that natural urge for him and save my flooring, all at the same time. He just went through a huge bundle of apple sticks in record time, courtesy of our friend Amy, taking all the bark off each one of them before moving on to the next twig.

Lucky is also an affectionate rabbit. He loves attention, and he’ll dig at you and grunt and growl until he gets it, but he only wants to be petted. One night last week I was sitting on the floor with him, and he just flopped himself down in a big bunny puddle right beside me so I could lavish attention on him. I really felt bad when I finally had to get up… he’s just so sweet.

Friday Foster – Arwen

It’s that time of the week again… time to highlight a Friday Foster rabbit. As I wrote last week, I am a fosterer for Indiana House Rabbit Society. Since we’re always looking for great homes for our adoptable rabbits, I’ve decided to use this space to highlight a different foster rabbit each week. You may see some of them more than once; some of our long-term foster rabbits spend years in foster care before finding their forever homes.

This week’s foster rabbit is Arwen. She and three other rabbits were being starved to death by their owners, living in a outdoor hutch in the miserable, winter weather in Louisville Union, Kentucky. A good Samaritan convinced their owners to relinquish them, and then arranged for the four to be taken into foster care.

Arwen is learning quickly that living indoors is nice. She was spayed a couple of weeks ago, and treated for a nasty case of ear mites, but now she has a clean bill of health and a new lease on life. If you’re interested in information about adopting Arwen, or any other Indiana HRS adoptables, please visit our website at www.indianahrs.org. Check back next week to meet some of my personal foster rabbits, Wendy & Waldo.

Friday Foster – Hyzenthlay

February 22nd, 2008

In my offline life I provide foster care for a domestic rabbit rescue organization. Indiana House Rabbit Society is my local chapter of the national House Rabbit Society, founded in 1988 by caring individuals interested in bettering the lives of domestic rabbits in need.

Most people think rabbits are just disposable pets — in many areas they’re still thought of as livestock rather than pets. Rabbits make wonderful pets for the right home — they’re primarily independent creatures, but are also very social and affectionate. The majority of our rescues come from shelters all over the state of Indiana, but in the last year we’ve partnered with animal control agencies in nearby states to assist with large-scale confiscations, resulting in an explosion in our fostering and adoption programs!

Every Friday I’ll be featuring an adoptable rabbit here, just to give a little introduction and hopefully give some additional exposure. This week we’re going to meet Hyzenthlay, who was rescued this past winter from a backyard in Louisville, Kentucky. Her “owner” (I use the term very loosely) had decided that he no longer wanted to care for his 60+ rabbits, and when he notified the local animal control agency they contacted us for help. Our volunteers The owner were was able to wrangle the majority of them — capturing rabbits in outdoor situations is difficult because when allowed free range they build lovely burrows and nests underground — and surrendered them. Of the rabbits captured only 16 were released to our organization, though that number increased to 21 once Hyzenthlay had her babies.

Hyzenthlay Hyzenthlay & Kits

Hyzenthlay is currently looking for a forever home. She still needs to be spayed; her babies will be weaned soon, and then the big appointment will be made. She’s a lovely rabbit, just a little timid.
