I had no intent to liveblog the inauguration, but I’m watching the live feed at the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies website. It’s nice, because they’ve got closed captioning, but that technology is just not right. Apparently, President-Elect Obama entered to “cheese and applause”. Hmmm.

11:25 pm, and John McCain concedes the election with only 156 electoral votes. And that’s that. I’m pretty well speechless… and I’ve never been prouder to have voted and to be on the winning side. I’m ready to move on, ready to see change. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this country.

I’d stick this thing in the sidebar, but it won’t fit. This is by far the most exciting election I’ve participated in since I began voting in 1996… I can’t wait for the results to start rolling in! It’s like opening night of the newest Harry Potter movie.

ETA: Way to go, Hoosiers! While most of the state is overwhelmingly red, there’s enough blue to move us to a nice shade of purple. Woohoo!!

I did it. I participated in the most patriotic of acts this evening, from 6:00 to 6:40. The line moved quickly, everyone was courteous, and it was great. I filled in the ovals on my absentee-in-person ballot, and I have to say I’ve never been prouder to sign my name.

Now to find out the results… I can’t wait. I’ve never been so invested in an election. If only to prove my parents wrong. (hee-hee)

You know, I’m glad to live in a country where we have more than one choice when it comes to who runs the country. I’m thrilled to have the ability to say what I think about each candidate. What I’m NOT thrilled about is the hate, specifically the hate that’s currently spewing from the conservative right, populated by “Christians”. And yes, I say “Christians” (imagine me making air quotes)… I grew up in a holiness church, went to very conservative Christian schools, and the attitudes these people show is absolutely not the way I was taught that Christ would have his followers behave. It makes me ashamed that I ever associated myself with people like this…

I fail to understand why people stick to the “Obama’s a terrorist. Obama’s a Muslim” routine, even after being proven wrong. I don’t understand why John McCain is supposed to be more patriotic somehow because he was a POW, and therefore more qualified to be president. I don’t understand why the conservative right thinks they have the market cornered on patriotism, love of country, and free speech.

Vote for who you want, but VOTE. Like the ladies over atMOMocrats say, I’m voting for “That One”.

RibFest ’08

I’m not a big meat-eater, but I do like outdoor concerts, so when my brother and sister-in-law invited me to go to RibFest yesterday, I figured I had nothing else going on… and besides, Jonny Lang was playing.

We got there around 6:45 or so, and unfortunately missed most of Jonny Lang’s show… but we were in plenty of time for Ted Nugent. I didn’t even know he was still alive! I couldn’t believe how expensive it all was — $5 to get in, and then 7 tickets for $10. I spent $40 on food and drink alone… and I have to say I don’t think it was really worth it. The food wasn’t bad, but I could have had it at any barbecue place here in town. But…

I would NOT have been able to see the Nugent fans en masse. What a crowd! First, there was a woman who *might* have been pregnant, wearing what I think was the top half of a nightie, carrying her toddler with one arm while holding a cigarette in the other hand. It was really great to see her blow smoke in the baby’s face. Then there was the guy standing around with his ginormous beer belly, but instead of fastening his shirt, he only fastened the bottom button. As if that made all the difference? Oh, and it’s always fun to watch the drunks try to navigate the cable protectors on the sidewalk. H I L A R I O U S.

The thing that struck me most, though, was how the crowd went wild when Nugent yelled “Obama can bite me!” I can’t believe that this — THIS — is the Republican constituency in central Indiana?! This is the right wing? These people are conservatives? These people are ignorant. These are the people that vote Republican because it’s what they’ve always done, not because they think McCain is the right man for the job. It’s a scary proposition, and I’m so glad to have the freedom to vote for Obama. Ted Nugent can bite ME.
