You know, when they build new developments they strip away all the good soil and sell it -- I'm betting they didn't do that in the old days. My mom keeps talking about how her grandmother planted all kinds of perennials at her house around Holmes Ave. and Washington St., but I'm guessing that she still had a good 12" of topsoil on top of the heavy clay. I guess I'll see how it works -- the hostas I planted three years ago have certainly taken off in it, so I hope it'll be okay.

Funny note about having soil delivered... originally, I was going to have 2 cubic yards of topsoil delivered, to build the flowerbed up. It turned out that was going to be WAY too much, but they wouldn't deliver less, and Lowe's wanted $60 to deliver. Of course if I had been smart, I would have had all the soil AND the mulch delivered at the same time, and I'm guessing they would have unloaded it where I wanted it, so I wouldn't have had to handle it so much. Ah, live and learn.

Oh man, I hate that clay soil! I have that at my old house too. It must be something about those subdivisions on former farmland... the soil isn't like that at the house in the older part of the city.

I tore out a bush last weekend that had been in the ground for nine years. THAT was a job and a half! I don't think I could have done it without a mattock and loppers, and there are still a bunch of roots underground. The new barberry looks nice, though.

You should have had all that soil delivered and skipped all the bags in your little car!
