Friday Foster - Hyzenthlay
In my offline life I provide foster care for a domestic rabbit rescue organization. Indiana House Rabbit Society is my local chapter of the national House Rabbit Society, founded in 1988 by caring individuals interested in bettering the lives of domestic rabbits in need.
Most people think rabbits are just disposable pets — in many areas they’re still thought of as livestock rather than pets. Rabbits make wonderful pets for the right home — they’re primarily independent creatures, but are also very social and affectionate. The majority of our rescues come from shelters all over the state of Indiana, but in the last year we’ve partnered with animal control agencies in nearby states to assist with large-scale confiscations, resulting in an explosion in our fostering and adoption programs!
Every Friday I’ll be featuring an adoptable rabbit here, just to give a little introduction and hopefully give some additional exposure. This week we’re going to meet Hyzenthlay, who was rescued this past winter from a backyard in Louisville, Kentucky. Her “owner” (I use the term very loosely) had decided that he no longer wanted to care for his 60+ rabbits, and when he notified the local animal control agency they contacted us for help. Our volunteers The owner were was able to wrangle the majority of them — capturing rabbits in outdoor situations is difficult because when allowed free range they build lovely burrows and nests underground — and surrendered them. Of the rabbits captured only 16 were released to our organization, though that number increased to 21 once Hyzenthlay had her babies.
Hyzenthlay is currently looking for a forever home. She still needs to be spayed; her babies will be weaned soon, and then the big appointment will be made. She’s a lovely rabbit, just a little timid.
